BTS might be the most popular boy group the world has ever seen, now.
With record-setting views for their YouTube music videos and album purchases along with their money-making star power — the group brought in $130 million in 2019 sales from merchandising alone, according to The Hollywood Reporter — the seven-member K-pop group has become a worldwide sensation.
Insider took a look at BTS’s meteoric rise to stardom and how the members have transformed the music industry with insight from K-pop and music industry experts as well as a recently published Harvard Business School case study that analyzed the band’s success.
To date, BTS have won 283 awards out of 499 nominations. Today is 8th years from the first day BTS debuted officially to now when they became super stars. Let look back some memorable milestones on 8-Year journey.
The BTS members were first discovered in the fall of 2010.
BTS members were first discovered in 2010 by their current management company Big Hit Entertainment, a South kσrєαn entertainment company.
Entertainment companies like Big Hit have a few different ways to recruit talent whether it’s online or in real life, according to a recent Harvard Business School case study that analyzed the global success of BTS.
After being discovered, the new recruits become trainees who received coaching to prepare them to be superstars. This includes dancing and singing lessons as well as acting and media training.
BTS debuted the band’s first album in 2013.
BTS officially debuted as a seven-member K-pop idol group in the summer of 2013.
Their first album “2 COOL 4 SKOOL” saw a fair amount of success, placing tenth on a monthly kσrєαn music chart a month after release. The album’s title song, “No more dream” can be interpreted as a commentary on the pressures of growing up as a teenager in kσrєα.

July 13, 2014: BTS had their first stage in the US. This free show is part of Mnet’s reality show “a̾m̾e̾r̾i̾c̾an Hustle Life”. BTS distributed flyers by themselves and only 200 people attended.
On February 12, 2014, BTS released their 2nd mini album “Skool Luv Affair” with the title song “Boy In Luv”. The song is produced by Rap Monster and Suga. Up to now, the MV “Boy In Luv” has surpäṩṩed 75 million views.
On August 20, 2014, BTS continued to release their first studio album “Dark & Wild” with 14 songs. In it, the title song “Danger” was composed by Thanh Bui. BTS is increasingly äṩṩerting its heat with more than 109,098 album copies sold.
But they still didn’t win any 1st place on the charts.
BTS received the First rank for the first time in 2015
On April 29, 2015, BTS released the 3rd mini album “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Pt.1”. This continues to be an album with a distinct musical style of BTS, when the songs are composed by the members of the group. After a few years after their debut in 2015, BTS came in first place on a weekly music performance show on one of kσrєα’s three major television broadcast networks with their first single with “I NEED U” from their third mini-album, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1. It even achieved No.1 realtime on Genie, Daum Music, and Soribada charts right after its release, and was in the Top 10 realtime on MelOn, Bugs, and Naver Music.
On November 30, 2015, the group released the fourth mini album “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Pt.2”. Following the success of “I Need You”, the title song “Run” broke the charts of MelOn, Mnet, Bugs, Olleh, Naver, Genie, Monkey3 after just 1 hour of release. At the same time, all songs on this album entered the top 10 of MelOn, Genie, Bugs and iTunes in the US.
Breaking into the world market in 2016
2016 was an extremely memorable year in BTS’s career. The title song “Blood Sweat & Tears” of the 2nd studio album “WINGS” has reached 6.4 million views on YouTube within 24 hours of being posted. According to the statistics released by the US Billboard, “WINGS” has excellently climbed to number 26 out of the 200 most popular and popular albums in this world’s No. 1 music market.

The First Year For Many First Ranks and Achievements
In 2018, the album Love Yourself: Tear took #1 on the Billboard 200, making BTS the first kσrєαn group to achieve this feat. According to Billboard, a spokesperson for Youtube confirmed that the “Idol” MV has surpäṩṩed 45 million views in the first 24 hours. This view helped BTS break YouTube’s record, becoming the MV with the most views in 24 hours, surpäṩṩing Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do with 43.2 million views.
May 21, 2018: BTS attended the Billboard Music Awards for the first time. Here, the group caused a storm when they performed the song “Fake Love” and received the “Top Social Artist” award.
In October 2018, BTS became the first kσrєαn group to appear on the cover of an issue that mentioned “Next Generation Leaders”. The cover of Time magazine features only the most respected figures – including the President and the Pope.

May 6, 2019: BTS made history by becoming the first Asian artist to win the “Top Group” award at the Billboard Music Awards for 2th.
Also in 2019, BTS became the first K-pop artist to present at the Grammy Awards. BTS attended the Grammy Awards as awarding artists. Halsey, who collaborated with the group for their single “Boy with Luv,” supported the group by saying that the “US is so far behind.”
In this year, BTS was the first kσrєαn artist to hold a concert and sell out tickets at Wembley (e̾n̾g̾l̾a̾n̾d ̾). The concert took place for 2 consecutive nights, with 60,000 spectators each night attending.

One of the unforgettable moments in 2020 is that BTS wrote a new history for the kσrєαn music scene when they officially scored their first GRAMMY nomination. BTS is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at The 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards.
Besides this achievement, BTS’ “Map of the Soul: 7” album marked the group’s fourth No.1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. The album recorded 347,000 album sales and over 74 million on-demand streams, making it the “largest week for any album in 2020,” Billboard reported at the time. According to Nielsen Music’s annual report, only two albums racked up at least 500,000 sales in 2020, and they were Taylor Swift’s Folklore and BTS’s Map of the Soul: 7.
For the music video for “ON,” the album’s lead single, the Head of Culture and Trends at YouTube confirmed that they “set a new record for peak viewers for a premiere.”
BTS topped a Guinness World Record for most viewed concert livestream in a virtual concert that was viewed by over 700,000 fans globally.
BTS bagged seven Guinness World Records in 2020, breaking their own world record for the number of Guinness World Records they’ve broken in a single year.
The song achieved 7,778,950 streams within a day, and beat Taylor Swift’s previous record of 7.742 million streams with “Cardigan.” Now, BTS holds the title for the biggest Spotify debut of 2020.
On November 20th BTS released their latest album BE, a beautiful remedy filled with comfort and understanding for those who have struggled during the pandemic. BE sold more than 1.95 million copies on its first day and accumulated 42.8 million streams within the first 24 hours on Spotify, the platform’s biggest debut this year for an album by a group, which was previously held by Map of the Soul: 7.
All of the tracks ranked in the Billboard Hot 100 with the title track ‘Life Goes On‘ topping the chart, which makes it the first song primarily sung in kσrєαn to h̾i̾t ̾ the No. 1 spot on the chart. The album itself topped the Billboard 200, making it their fifth album to do so, and BTS were crowned the fastest group to achieve five chart-topping albums since The Beatles.
In MAMA 2020, While making a Daesang Sweep for the second year in a row, BTS also made history at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards. They became the first artist in MAMA history to win Artist of the Year five consecutive years in a row.
As part of South kσrєα’s inaugural Youth Day, BTS delivered a powerful, motivational speech for kσrєαn youth, speaking candid stories from their struggles on their journey to becoming one of the biggest music acts in history.
The members also presented President Moon Jae-in with a purple-colored box as a “Year 2039 Gift” to be stored at the National Museum of kσrєαn Contemporary History in Seoul, much like a time capsule. The box will then be opened at the 20th Youth Day event in 2039.
Also in 2020, BTS performed at the MTV VMAs for the very first time
At the same year, BTS were honored in Gold House’s 2020 A100 List as Most Impactful Asians. They were awarded with a Van Fleet Award
